Training
Want your horse to learn the game? We work on tuning up the western basics: neck reining, solid stop and roll back. Then work cattle. We will work with your horse to learn how to "look" at cows, anticipate a cows movement and rate for either team penning or roping. Specific training for team penning and/or roping is available.
Terry Martin, Jr. has been training and working with cow horses throughout his life. Growing up on a horse ranch and continuing a third generation tradition of horseman.

Cowboy Tradition!
The Martin family has been roping cattle for generations. We are keeping the tradition alive at The Double T. Learn Team Roping, Calf Roping and Break-Away roping!
Team Roping: Consists of a team of 2 riders. One header and one heeler. The header is required to rope the horns of the cow, and the heeler the back legs, or heels.
Calf Roping: The roper has to rope the calf, jump off the horse and tie the calf.
Break Away Roping: Becoming more and more popular, and now a regular event in rodeo. This is "calf roping" without the "jumping off and tieing part". The roper is required to come out of the chute and rope the calf. When the calf is roped, the rope breaks free from the saddle and time is called. This is a great place to start, as no dallying is required!

Any Questions?
Perhaps we can help. There is allot that goes into making a winning team penning run. Cattle sense, horse sense and team work are part of the equation. Strategies and the ability to change strategies as things go wrong are also a big part of the game. Cows have a mind of their own, and don't always play by the rules! They zig when they should zag - stop when they should go - and run when you want them to stay put.
The premise is pretty simple: A numbered herd of cattle and three riders. Get like-numbered cattle out of the herd and bring them to the pen. We also do allot of Sorting practice. That is cutting numbered cattle out in sequence. Three riders enter a numbered herd of cattle and cut them in order, starting with the number that is called, going in order until all are over the foul line. Sorting practice is a great way to hone your cattle skills!
All these events are timed. Fastest times win!
